Kwanzaa 101 2007

Hetep and Respect every holiday is a Cultural Health opportunity. If you have never seen the seven principles of Kwanzaa take a look. If you have seen them and need a refresher here it is. One of the nice things about the holidays is that we get a chance to learn about each others holidays.





Kwanzaa is the most widely celebrated original African American holiday. “The Father of Kwanzaa” is Maulana Ron Karenga, an African American scholar and social activist. The celebration runs from December 26 to January 1. Kwanzaa (First Fruits Festival) is in the best spirit of Cultural Literacy in that it is a synchronization of African values at home and abroad. This remarkable blend of African and African American values is a major force in the fight to improve Cultural Health in our community by raising Cultural Literacy and reducing Cultural Poisoning here in America

Kwanzaa is anchored by its seven guiding principles, known as the Nguzo Saba. Each principle is denoted by one word from the pan African language known as Swali, as reproduced below. I have added the pronunciation.

Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles)

1.UMOJA (Unity) [oo-MO-jah]
To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and ethnic group.

2.KUJICHAGULIA (Self-determination) [koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-ah]
To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves instead of being defined, named, created for and spoken for by others.

3.UJIMA (Collective Work and Responsibility) [oo-JEE-mah]
To Build and maintain our community together and make our sister's and brother's problems our problems and to solve them together.

4.UJAMAA (Cooperative Economics) [oo-jah-MAH]
To Build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.

5.NIA (Purpose) [NEE-ah]
To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

6. KUUMBA (Creativity) [koo-OOM-bah]
To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

7.IMANI (Faith) [ee-MAH-nee]
To believe with all our hart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Bush Restarts “Indian”/American War

Bush and the anti-humanist Republicans have caused the restart of the “Indian” War in America. During King George’s rein the Lakota “Indians” declare their formal separation from the United States of America.



Modern day decedents of the indigenous greats like Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse of Turtle Island, commonly known today as America, re-declare their freedom and seventy.

This declaration of unilateral preemptive withdrawal from unjustly imposed United States treaties was delivered to the U.S. State Department earlier this week. The Newly energize Lakota Nation declared that 33 treaties have been broken. To my surprise, there were no media reports of any mention of the other 300 or so “Indian”/American treaties that seem to be hidden in the basement of the U.S. Congress.

This action puts the status of northern Turtle Island (The Dakotas, Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming) back into dispute. We can assume from this action that the Lakota Nation will not be adapting the new Bush concentration champ cards (“National ID Card”), as they will be providing their citizens with their own drivers licenses and passports.

As I reflect on what has happened from a Cultural Health point of view, the words that come to mind are – Talk about chickens coming home to roost --. Was it not Bush, who unilaterally withdrew from international treaties. Seceded from the United Nations and unilaterally preemptively attacked Iraq. Was it not Bush and the anti-humanist republicans, who attacked African Americans by suppressing 1 million plus votes. Was it not the now disgraced, lawless Republican Supreme Court, that declared, that all American votes will no longer be counted. Is it not Bush’s government, that is building walls and turning a blind eye to Latino American and Arab American harassment?

Remember the drowning Blacks, Latinos, Native and other Americans, while Dr. Rice went shoe shopping and Bush stayed on vacation. Remember out of control police and the record breaking rise in police brutality with these new electronic wipes (tasers) Native Americans watch African American progress rolled back with the Republican/Libertarian reversion to European American Affirmative Action. From Juliani’s New York to LA. We see police shooting Blacks 20 to 50 times with no justice, or Jena 6 Justice.

Bush was part of baseball leadership that perpetuated the culturally poisoned denigration of Native Americans with “mascots”. Right in his back yard the Boston “Red Skins” sit, and he has not raised one, single, word of moral outrage. Not to mention, White House connected Republicans (now convicted criminals) banding together to continue to steal the Native Americans blind on his watch.

Speaking of “chickens coming home to roost” What should we Americans due about all this. If we put our heads in the sand, or fall asleep at the switch, while bush and the crime family rob our treasury blind, kidnap and torture human beings at will and generally tear up the only thing that holds all of us ethnic Americans together, the constitution. Then as oldfogy said, “…we are, I am afraid, selling ourselves to the Devil and he may be collecting soon…”

The wheels have come off Iraq a long time ago, they are now coming of America. First our economic wheels start getting wobbly with the dollar sinking like a rock and the mortgage bubble about to blow up into recession. In addition, Bush made the social wheels wobblier then they need to be by attacking African and Latino Americans and putting them in voting cages. Now this, with the Native Americans, I respectfully suggest, that the few of us Humanist Americans left, circle the wagons, impeach Cheney and open negotiations with our brothers and sister of the Lakota Nation.

Police Shoot Unarmed Women in the Street

Out of control Miami Police shoot  unarmed  female protester, then laugh about it, another police outrage.

When any person in the society is not abused by police we are all abused. The only reason this is going to see the light of a court is that the person shot is part of the "justice" system. It It was you or I that was shot, you would never hear about this again.

I recommend the following, put shooting cop in jail. If the cop does not step forward, suspend all officers who could have shot the woman or saw or heard the shooter. If the shooter still does not come forward, fine all involved 6 months pay and fire the police chief.

What is the Meaning of Hotep?

Hetep and Respect Good Spirit, I have often opened conversations with this phrase. From time to time, I am asked what does Hetep (Hotep-common American pronunciation) mean.

Rather then writing a new answer each time I am asked, I have decided to create this short blog post and just refer people to it, to save some wear and tear on my digits.

Htp = Hotep (Hetep)

The word comes from Classical African Civilization, Kemet (Ancient Egypt) from a time going back more then 6,000 years. It is still used today by those who have some knowledge of the ancient traditions of our ancestors. For Cultural Soldiers it is the standard greeting.

It should be noted that CultureGraphically Cultural Citizens and Sleeping Giants in the Black community would typically not be familiar with this term. Most Non-Blacks are also not familiar with the term. One of the reasons Cultural Soldiers utilize the term in conversations with these individuals, is in an effort to raise Cultural Literacy regarding Blacks and thus improve Cultural Health in the general population.

Hetep means peace, not just saying peace, but also sending peaceful energy. It has been my experience that if you start a conversation with peace and respect it is more likely to be mutually beneficial.

The respect aspect of my greeting is taken from a famous radio personality Bob Law who use to have a show out of Washington D.C. He would greet his callers (it was a call in radio show) with "I Respect You" and often the callers would respond in kind. It alway struck me how remarkably well his conversations went, even on the most difficult topics. So it has been my practice to combine some of the ancient wisdom with some of Mr. Law's modern wisdom to aid me in my small Cultural Health contributions.

I Rudy Aunk do hereby challenge the honorable Mr. Bill Cosby to Culture Graphically pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Specifically Mr. Cosby, I challenge you to advance yourself from your current psychosocial position of Cultural Citizen, to the higher cultural ground of Cultural Soldier.

Your new book Come on People is helpful. Hitting our young Sleeping Giants over the head with a 2x4 to get their attention is needed. Focusing on parents and education is a much needed piece of the cultural puzzle. Trying to move a soul from Sleeping Giant Hood to Cultural Citizen Hood is a good thing.

I understand that I have used some terms that you may not be familure with.

As you know, your work in I Spy and The Cosby Show broke the Amos and Andy paradigm and people were living and laughing with African Americans instead of at Black people. You helped literally change the way Black people saw themselves in America and the way Americans saw us.

You have more ground breaking work left in you. In fact, you are one of the few people at this point in time with access to the financial and educational resources, to again utilize the media to help guide our community to the next level.

As you achieve Cultural Soldier Hood (I am confident you will succeed in this) I challenge you to produce two movies, First and epic movie about Classical African Civilization and then a children friendly cartoon series that educates them about the Classical Africans.

It is only fitting that because you played a doctor in your first ground breaking production, that you should play the great Classical African physician Imhotep, in this ground breaker. Think about it, a movie on the scale of “Moses” about the untold story of Classical African Civilization. A movie, lets call it Imhotep for the sake of this discussion, that will gather more eyeballs then Roots, as it edifies our people and the world about the original “roots”.

Now that you have our attention, what are you going to do with it? My suggestion, supercharge our education and once again establish a new paradigm for our youth and America at large.

Hey Bill, if by chance this open letter should reach you, I will be easy to find. After shooting some hoops with Fat Albert, we have sat down near the court and he is asking me some questions about this Cultural Health thing.

Hetep and Respect, Jim Dent, good find, AP from MSNBC, hay, its all in the family. congratulations to Genarlow Wilson, his family, the Blogosphere and all those who kept the pressure on, Amen.

When ever Cultural Terrorism raises its ugly head the early responders must be there and keep the pressure on. It is good to know that the American injustice system sometimes works. It is good to know that it is still possible, that when America is pushed, she can sometime be a more humanist nation then anti-humanist.

Keep a sharp eye, the call to arms is not over. The Jena 6 and other African Americans still face cultural terrorism. It should be noted that three out of seven of the Georgia Supreme Court judges demonstrated themselves to be anti-humanists. Be mindful that these are no doubt, the decedents of those who enslaved my ancestors. These destroyers of life still walk among us, Keep A Sharp Eye!

A Culturally Healthy African Should Have an African Name

My Name is Kunta Kente (7 Min)

As Malcolm X said, What is your name? Where did you get it from? Has someone made you say your name is Toby! After watching this clip all should understand the planed and successful Cultural Poisoning associated with a name. As most African Americans I was given a name from a non-African ethnic group. I lived most of the first half of my life with a European American name. The Nation of Islam was the first major African American organization to effectively start to correct this aspect of Cultural Poisoning known as Image Poisoning. The “X”, in Malcolm X, is widely known in this regard. Members of this group typically took on Arab names not African Names. However, this was a positive step on the road to Cultural Health insofar as they discarded their “slave” names.

Many African Americans who did not want to become Muslim and generally remained Culturally Illiterate but gaining in Cultural Health, utilized their new Black pride to invent African sounding names like Tiesia, Tiquanda and Ushika. Interestingly this remarkably unique American naming system was gifted mainly to the females of our group. The next stage was giving our children actual traditional African names like Kori and Seti that have a meaning.

As African Traditional Religions (ATR) where resurrected, full African naming systems and traditional naming rituals we restored to those who were maximizing their return to Cultural Health. I am proud to say that I have reversed Toby Syndrome as part of the cure for my own image poisoning. My African name is Nuu Maat Aunk (teacher of truth about the keys to life). Most of my friends know me as Aunk. My writing name is Rudy Aunk this is done to make pronunciation and remembering my name easy on my fellow Americans, in the same way my Asian American friends make their names easy on me, with names like Daisy Ding and John Lee that maintain their cultural integrity.

Let me close by expressing my pride in understanding that while I initially gave all my children European Names, I in my later life give, them each at least one African name in the great tradition of Classical African Civilization. I also note that most of my grandchildren have been given at least one non-European name by their parents.

If your name is Toby, you should consider a 21^st Century Cultural Health adjustment.

P.S. in case you think this is just history. Listen to the screams of someone being tasered today. The electronic whip of the anti-humanist is alive and well in jails, courts and on American Streets.

Is Bill Cosby’s New Book, Right or Wrong?

Bill Cosby and Alvin F. Poussaint’s new book is out, Come On People: On the Path from Victims to Victors. How will it impact the African American internal discussion regarding our cultural health and 21st century effectiveness?

I think it is a helpful book and point of view, that makes a positive contribution to the conversation and related action steps. However, we must keep in mind that Bill and Al’s view has important but limited value with respect to AA CulturaGraphic progress toward maximized Cultural Health.

Lets take a minute to come up to speed on CultureGraphics as it relates to melanin folks.

CultureGraphics 101 -The Soldier, Citizen, Giant Outline


3. Cultural Soldiers: Are actively promoting the resurrection and restoration of Classical African Civilization in the minds of men.
- Cultural Soldiers come from and have the positive Black attributes of Cultural Citizens.
- You will find CAC objects in their living space. They sometimes wear CAC objects
- Examples: Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Dr. Amen - Wesley Snipes and Erykah Badu

2. Cultural Citizens: Interested in promotion of self, family and their ethnic group
- They are Black and proud. They may or may not know about CAC.
- Mild levels of Cultural Poisoning can sometimes be observed.
- Examples: Dr. Martin Luther King, Dr. Bill Cosby and Oprah Winfrey

1. Sleeping Giants: Interested mostly in self-satisfaction (economic, sexual, etc.)
- They are Spiritual and mental prisoners of another ethnic group
- No African objects are likely to be found in their home or on their person
- High degree of Cultural Poisoning can be detected.
Examples: Judge Clarence Thomas, 50 cent and Michael Jackson

I grew up watching the Cosby Show and Archie Bunker, Bill, was no Archie Bunker. He was also no Malcolm X and Dr. Al, the psychological consultant for the Cosby Show, was no Dr. Clarke or Dr. Nobles. Both shows demonstrated different aspects of Cultural Poisoning Mr. Bunker modeling a rather acute case, lol.

Black TV shows from Amos and Andy to Bill Cosby, all exhibited varying degrees of Cultural Poisoning. In a historical sea of negative Black TV shows, The Cosby Show was a breath of fresh air. It became the TV model for much of what we see today as the new African American middle class. The show should also be considered the poster child for middle class African American Cultural Citizen environmental motif and behavior.


Bill and Al did a good job as Cultural Citizens given their perceivable cosmological range. It is my considered opinion that Come on People is a solid brick on the road to building a bridge from SleepingGiant Hood to CulturalCitizen Hood. However, this is not the only bridge needed to maximize Cultural Health in the African American community. What do you think?

Aunk Back from Vacation

Hetep and Respect good spirits, I am back from vacation, sort of. The summer was filled with a lot of sun, swimming and tennis. I will miss it.

The American "Health" System is SiCKO

I just saw Sicko. Just so you know, I am not a movie goer However, after I heard a Republican recommend one of Micheal Moore's movies, I made it a must see. I am currently writing a book on Health and SiCKO is about Universal Health Care (UHC), Which countries have it and how it works. However, Sicko is not just about UHC it is about what kind of country do we want America to be.




In case you missed it, at 1:40 into the video, Dr Linda Peeno testified that she was hired by the criminal insurance industry to kill its customers. Dr. Peeno has subsequently pointed out that no "law enforcement" agency has contacted her or her company, let alone initiated prosecution for crimes against patients.

I mean wait a minute. just think about this for a second. Suppose you were hired by Walmart as a cashier and your manager told you ("implied") that you need to kill a certain percentage of the customers you serviced. would you want to be a customer? I mean what kind of store would this be? What kind of country do we live in?

I mean, I am just saying, now back to the immediate issue reform.

FDR had it right, here is the surprise lost clip that was at the end of SICKO.  These are the three pieces that caught my eye.

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and
unemployment;

The right to a good education.

From bottom to top Public Education, Social Security and our President has made a good down payment on the FDR health vision.

Supreme Court Restarts Race War in America

The King Bush fascist five on the Supreme Court openly attacked African Americans by deciding that Blacks should officially get inferior treatment again in America. The Criminal court that prevented all our votes from being counted is now moving in the direction of re-enslaving Africans in America.

In restarting the race war in America King Bush and the Republican crime family have expanded its war on Brown ethnic groups to three fronts Arabs, Latinos and now Africans at home and abroad.

America you are making a grave error. We now have a King in the White House who has attacked African American and Latino voters at the polls, a Pope sitting in the Vice Presidents seat and now a Supreme “Court” led by White Supremacists and one Cultural Traitor. We are disgraced abroad and now at home, talk about America going to hell in a hand basket.

The anti-African American Supreme Court decision ends the Cold Race War in America. This is the second shot in the Republican restart of the race war in America.

American sheepeople who have been asleep, wake up! Before this goes to far. We cannot sustain a war abroad and a war at home. Vote in 2008 to end these two wars.

I saw one of the Oprah shows and the fact that the discussion on Cultural Health (although they do not call it that, yet) has started is a good thing.

Having said that, My input is to alert all participants in the Cultural Health discussion of an important reality, indispensable to the forward progress of the discussion.

Imus and Snoop Dogg are both examples of the same Cultural Poisoning manifested in two different ethnic groups. Imus needs a good psychologist and a strong dose of Cultural Literacy. Reducing Cultural poisoning in the Hip Hop community requires fixing the ills that the poets of Hip Hop are calling to everyone's attention.

Culturally Healthy Black people have respect for their women and do not use the N-word. So, the question is how do we improve Hip Hop Cultural Health?

Ending Biblical Brainwash

For better mental and cultural health, it's time we classified
religious fundamentalism as a psychological disorder

Imagine that you're a psychiatrist. A new patient comes to see
you and says that he regularly talks to an invisible being who
never responds, that he reads excerpts from one ancient book and
that he believes wholeheartedly that its contents must be
accepted implicitly, if not taken literally.

The patient goes on to say that that the world is only 6,000
years old and that dinosaurs never existed. He brazenly rejects
modern science's observations and conclusions, and subscribes to
the notion that after death he will live in eternal bliss in
some alternate dimension. And throughout your meeting, he keeps
handing you his book and urging you to join him, lest you end up
after death in a far less desirable alternate dimension than him.

Is this a mentally healthy person? If you were a responsible
psychiatrist, how could you answer yes? These symptoms border on
delusional schizophrenia, which the American Psychological
Association's DSM-IV describes as involving a profound disruption
in cognition and emotion, assigning unusual significance or
meaning to normal events and holding fixed false personal beliefs.

So, should you insist on follow-up appointments along with some
strong medication? Well, quite obviously, the patient is a
religious fundamentalist. So he would most likely not be
diagnosed with a psychological problem. In fact, such a
diagnosis could land you in hot water; the patient's religious
beliefs are constitutionally protected.

Yet, perhaps it's time this changed, and that we made religious
fundamentalism a mental and cultural health issue. People should
be able to believe what they like, but only so long as their
convictions don't harm others or, arguably, themselves.
Fundamentalism, however, breeds fanaticism and often leads to
terrible violence, injustice and inequality. If society can force
drug addicts into rehabilitation because they're a danger to
themselves and the public, then we should be able to compel
religious fundamentalists to undergo treatment as well.

Religion as virus of the mind

Powell and Rice Tell The Truth About Iraq

Powell said this at a recent speech.

“People would say to me, ‘You're the black Secretary of State' and I'd reply, ‘Is there a white one?'” he said. “I would say I am the secretary of state who is black. The word black has to come after what I am, not before it.”

Former U.S. Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell is no doubt a great American. Generally I have found most of his statements and actions to be Culturally Healthy. This is a remarkable achievement for an African American in public office. His speech is a good one, his points about diversity I agree with.

However, think about this particular statement he made, are you your "job" and does your ethnicity come after your job? How does this statement relate to cultural integrity? Do you think such a mind set would have any effect on a person's personal integrity under pressure?
